Self-Guided Walks in the English Lake District

Category Archives: Walks

Just Walk

Just Walk

Just walk…. enjoy the view, and return to the same base the following night! Forget packing your suitcase every morning, separating out what you need for the day, unpacking and settling in to a new accommodation base in the evening. You will be at a single base throughout your stay with enough walks to keep you occupied for as much as a whole week

For the single base we have chosen the charming village of Grasmere, which is at the centre of the English Lake District and gives access to a wonderful variety of easy walks and harder hikes at all times of year. It also enjoys a wide choice of high standard accommodation, and our service can be provided at a quality guest house, superior or luxury hotel.

A stimulating selection of self-guided walks is offered, of which some are linear and lead to another finishing point, normally Ambleside, from where it is easy to return to Grasmere either by bus or by taxi; others are circular and return directly to the starting point in Grasmere. They are of varying standards of difficulty, easy, moderate and hard. The moderate walks, and even more so the hard ones, involve sections which may present mountain or fell conditions, and may not be possible in adverse weather, or when the days are very short in winter. The easy walks stay mainly in the valleys or just above the valley floors, and could be done in less favourable weather, depending on the clients’ inclination and experience.

Besides accommodation, the package includes:

An orientation meeting on arrival at the hotel, with a welcome drink; for this our representative will call on the clients to discuss with them their various walking or hiking options, the level of difficulty, clothing and equipment required, prevailing weather conditions, and any other issues of interest or concern to the clients.

A map and route description for 8 scenic walks to be done self-guided, 3 at easy standard, 2 moderate and 3 hard.

The clients will be free to call us at any time during their stay if they need information or advice about the walks, or indeed anything to do with their vacation and travel arrangements.

Although the walks are designed to be done self-guided, clients may wish to benefit from the expertise of a local guide, and we will gladly introduce them to a suitable person, either a Blue Badge Tourist Guide or a Mountain Leader if clients’ aspirations are more towards the high fells.

Excluding accommodation, the package as described costs £55 per client, or £70 for a single person. Accommodation prices will be obtained on request, or customers are free to make their own bookings.

The cost of a day’s personal guiding is from £230, depending on whether the guide chosen is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide, a Mountain Leader, or both.

Just Walk can provide an attractive two or three day follow-on from the Heart of Lakeland walk, and you can book both at the same time. To find out more about the Heart of Lakeland go back to Itineraries and click on the tour details.

This walk starts in Windermere and follows the first two linear walking days of the Heart of Lakeland, but from Eskdale, rather than going northwards to Wasdale and Keswick, it continues to the Cumbrian coast at Ravenglass where there is a station on the scenic Cumbrian coastal railway. It is possible to catch a train… Continue Reading

On Day Four, which is the second point to point walking day, there is no public transport available to shorten the distance: so that there is no need to walk more than 7 miles (11 kilometres), a taxi rendez-vous can be arranged… Continue Reading

About

About English Lakeland Walks

English Lakeland Walks was founded by Alan Heppenstall and was taken over by Mark Sandamas in 2022.

During much of the time that both men have been living and working in this beautiful corner of England they have walked the fells and valleys, and in the process acquired a close knowledge of this uniquely wonderful area. We hope the routes we have chosen for English Lakeland Walks reflect the enthusiasm and passion we feel for them ourselves.

Both the point to point tours described start in Windermere. Windermere is accessible by train, and the journey takes as little as four hours from London, and under two hours from Manchester (airport or city centre). The nearest airport is Manchester, which is well served by both European and North American cities.

About the Walks

The Heart of Lakeland is a 6 day/7 night journey of discovery through this magical landscape. It starts in Windermere and ends with a boat ride into Keswick, after visiting Hawkshead, Coniston and the valleys of Dunnerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale and Borrowdale. From Keswick the preferred choice is to hop on one of the regular buses, probably a double-decker, for the return to Windermere through the central Lake District.

The Heart of Lakeland can be extended for a day to allow further exploration to take place in the valleys of Ennerdale, Buttermere and Newlands.

The Cross Lakes Ramble follows the Heart of Lakeland as far as Eskdale, then branches off to head down to the west coast, and ends at Ravenglass on the Cumbrian Coastal railway. From here it is possible to catch a train northwards, for Whitehaven, Carlisle, Scotland and destinations in NE England; or southwards for Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, London and other destinations in England.

Just Walk is based in Grasmere, right at the centre of the Lake District. It is easily reached by train to Windermere, then a bus or taxi.

A popular conclusion to the Heart of Lakeland is to finish this not in Windermere or Keswick, but in Grasmere, and to spend a few days there of relaxation, with gentle walking (or even not so gentle) available as required through Just Walk. Grasmere is easily reached from Keswick by bus after the completion of the Heart of Lakeland, and luggage will be delivered there at no additional charge.

All three tours work well taken in combination with public transport. So why not leave the car behind, and let the trains do the work?
